I've had my fair share of short-lived flings and relationships that went nowhere. The best advice I ever received was from my grandfather, "don't date some broad that you can't see yourself marrying in the future. If you don't see a future with her, don't waste your time." Maybe I've grown up enough to understand what that means, because now, it's a whole different ball game.

Sometimes you have to take it slow. For me, I wasn't expecting any of this. I got blindsided, but it feels good.

I went on a mission, came back to the base and made plans with my boys to play Spades and Dominoes at our shitty little rec center. I saw her, introduced myself, stumbled over my words like a moron and thought I didn't have a chance. Then I convinced myself that I was delirious for even thinking like that. I met her again, we hit it off, became good friends, and now, we're madly in love with each other.

It happened just like that. Srsly. I'm stubborn, so my mind is made up and I don't care what people say because she has become a priority in my life.

Oh, and I'm here until February. My future remains largely uncertain after that. But I'm on cloud 9 and where I go she goes.

I know what that's like all too well, unfortunately. Yes, this will pass over time but you need to find it within yourself to be as strong as possible, but don't be afraid to mourn. Those who care about you will have your back during times of need. And if this new guy is worth a damn, he'll have your back, too.

Things on my end are just fine. What bothered me before has become the accepted norm for me. This third world country was once a beautiful place to live, and I sometimes see glimpses of that, but at the end of the day, it's still a third world country. Overall, I'm pretty good.

There's a new person in my life, too. That always helps.
